If the water used to prepare the fracturing fluid contains bacteria and enzymes, it may cause microbial corrosion, biomass accumulation, biosulfide production and polymer degradation. 

The enzymes produced by bacteria are particularly sensitive to most guar gum or guar gum derivatives, resulting in polymer degradation and premature viscosity loss.
